Thank You to Switched At Birth

The Switched at Birth cast thanks fans in this heartwarming video, but I have to thank the cast, writers, and producers of Switched at Birth for bringing this show to audiences and for being such a big part of my (viewing) life for the past five years.

I was fortunate enough to find Deaf culture as a 13-year-old, and, even though I am hearing, it changed the way I saw the world. It brought me to a new language and brought me new friends and experiences. One of the many beautiful things about Switched at Birth is how it introduced viewers–hearing, hard of hearing, AND deaf–to Deaf culture, American Sign Language, and the concept of Deaf Gain.

This is an amazing, groundbreaking show, filled with multifaceted characters and which shares Deaf culture — I will sorely miss Switched at Birth, but I am looking forward to the final season and seeing how the show wraps up. I hope to be able to write with as much heart as the writers of this show someday, and I hope to work on a show someday that has the same kind of impact this one did.

As this show goes off the air, I take solace in the fact that there will be more shows like it–as the #DeafTalent movement keeps gaining momentum, and people are becoming more aware of the need for more diversity and representation in Hollywood, there are sure to be more shows that we didn’t know we needed, but that will change our lives.

This is just the beginning.
